McCann Makes History as Men's Tennis Splits a Pair of Matches

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LAS VEGAS, Nev.—Sunday marked an exciting afternoon for the UC Riverside Men's Tennis Team as the Highlanders closed out a long weekend in a tough doubleheader with Weber State and host UNLV. UCR would pick up a win, a loss, and a piece of Highlander history.

WEBER STATE
The Wildcats came into Sunday's match winless and the Highlanders aimed to keep that way dropping WSU 4-2.

"We came out slow in the doubles round so we will have to continue searching for the right combination," Head Coach Mattias Johansson said. "I was satisfied to see that we fought to stay in our singles matches though and we were able to get the win."

The Wildcats grabbed the doubles point with wins on courts one and three, but the new team of senior Kyle McCann and freshman Andreas Whelen-Merediz fought for a 6-4 victory on court two.

The Highlanders would bounce back in singles play as junior Nabil Abdallah, junior Gilbert Chung, and Whelan-Merediz all earned straight set wins to give UCR a 3-2 lead. McCann would finish it for the Highlanders with 7-5, 7-6 win on court one for his 52nd career singles win, which ties the all-time record.

UNLV
The undefeated Runnin' Rebels protected their home courts all weekend and despite a hard fought effort from UCR, UNLV would take the match 4-2.

"After putting away Weber State in a three hour battle an hour earlier, and then to come back and perform at this level vs UNLV was great to see," Johansson said. "I was proud of the way we fought and knowing that we can push good teams definitely gives us confidence moving forward on the road."

UC Riverside opened with two doubles win to take a 1-0 lead in the overall match as the duo of sophomore Fillip Engstrom and junior Anderson Ju earned a close 7-6 (7-4) victory on court one and the team of Abdallah and Chung took a identical win on court three.

Down 1-0, the Runnin' Rebels would answer taking four out of five singles matches to improve to 5-0.

The sole singles triumph came from none other than McCann who etched his name into Highlander history with his 53rd career singles win. He is now just one doubles win away from holding three program records (Most singles wins, Most doubles wins, Most total wins).

The Highlanders will now head east to face Delaware, St. Francis, and Coppin State.
