RIVERSIDE, Calif.— UC Riverside men's tennis is taking their talents to the east coast this week. The team travels to play five matches in North Carolina before finishing up the road trip with two matches in Virginia. The trip starts out at North Carolina A&T on Monday then takes them to Shaw University and Campbell University on Wednesday for a double-header. Wednesday and Thursday double-headers are at Methodist University/North Carolina Central and Hampton University/Norfolk State University, respectively.
EAST COAST SPRING BREAK
For the third consecutive year, the UC Riverside's men's tennis team will be making the trip south of the Mason Dixon line for some spring break tennis. Last year the trip was a big success as the Highlanders went 4-1 on the trip.
THIS TIME LAST YEAR
Last year at this point in the season, the Highlanders were 9-11. The team has improved on that mark this year to 11-9. The 2 game improvement is a product of the continual growth for the program. The Highlanders are 7-2 in their last nine matches.
HIGHLANDER HISTORY
Their 11 wins are the most wins through the first 20 matches in school history. The program has continued to ascend in an upward projection under Head Coach Mattias Johansson.
GILL IS ILL
Gilbert Chung has been on a tear by willing 11 straight singles matches at position three. During that time, it has helped the Highlanders go 7-4 with a pair of three and four-match winning streaks. Gilbert and his doubles' partner, Nabil Abdallah, have gelled as of recently. The combo has won three out of their last four matches together.
WHELAN AND DEALIN'
Doubles partners, Andreas Whelan-Merediz and Kyle McCann, have also been playing lights out together. The combo is currently on a three-match winning streak and have won eight out of their last ten. Andreas has continued to play well in singles play at the four and five position. He has gone 9-1 in his last 10 matches.
