Softball Completes Sweep of Santa Clara; Extends Win Streak to 13

RIVERSIDE, Calif.—The UC Riverside Softball Team (17-12) capped off the non-conference season on a high note Sunday afternoon as the Highlanders swept Santa Clara with a 4-2 win in the final game of the series. UCR will now head into Big West play on a 13 game winning streak.

"The streak is great, but we are just taking it one game at a time," Head Coach Nikki Palmer said. "Conference is a whole different game so we have to bring the same energy and confidence when we take on Cal Poly here next weekend."

The final game with the Broncos was a slugging showcase for UCR as seven different Highlanders combined for nine hits and all four of the team's runs crossed by way of the long ball. Despite taking a 1-0 lead, UC Riverside would have to rely on clutch hitting to silence SCU.

A committee of freshman Megan Casper and junior Jacy Boles supplied the pitching efforts for the Highlanders as Casper earned the start tossing 3.1 scoreless innings, and Boles picked up her 10th win of the season in a relief appearance. Boles would pick up just one earned run.

UCR struck first in the second frame as senior Amanda Lynch crushed solo shot to center field for her second homer of the year. The Highlanders would remain on top 1-0 until the Broncos put together a two-run fifth inning.

The Highlanders responded almost immediately down 2-1 in fifth as junior Emma Ramelot took a ball deep over the left field wall to tie the game at 2-2. Just three batters later, junior Melanie Olmos gave her team its third home run on the day and the lead sending a towering shot over the deepest spot in center field with a runner on.

A 4-2 lead would stand for the Highlander as Boles shutout the final two innings of Bronco batting to give her team its 13th straight win.

Junior Danielle Ortega finished the day going 2-for-3 with a walk and represented the winning run, and Lynch finished 2-for-3 with an RBI.

UC Riverside will now head to conference play welcoming Cal Poly to Amy S. Harrison Field next weekend.
