Box Score GREENSBORO, N.C. – UC Riverside's men's tennis team started off their week of spring break tennis on a good note. The team traveled over 2,400 miles to North Carolina A&T University and collected a 5-2 victory. The win continues their recent success and puts them at 8-2 in their last 10 matches.
"The guys were fighting off jet-lag and lack of sleep so I am very proud of them for pulling it out today to start te trip," Head Coach Mattias Johansson said. "It was an uphill battle after dropping the doubles round but we came through. Now we're going to get some sleep and be ready for the doubleheader tomorrow."
The Highlanders fell 2-1 in doubles play to the lose the point but bounced back in a strong way in singles play to take the match. After McCann started off the singles match with a win to even it up to 1-1, positions 3-6 won each of their singles matches. Upperclassmen Gilbert Chung and Anderson Ju all won their respective singles matches. The young bucks of Vignesh Subramanyan and Andreas Whelan-Merediz won the other two singles matches.
Gilbert Chung continued his hot streak to win his 12th straight singles match. Chung and Nabil Abdallah furthered their strong play together and won UCR's lone doubles match, 6-3. The team looks to continue their winning ways the rest of the week.
Their travels continue to Shaw University tomorrow for their first match of the day at 6:00 AM PST and then to Campbell University for the second match at 12:00 PM PST.
