Baseball Drops Final Non-Conference Game at UNLV

LAS VEGAS, Nev.—Despite early and consistent scoring by the Highlanders, the UC Riverside Baseball Team could not pull away in its final non-conference matchup with UNLV. The Runnin' Rebels would find their bats late to take the game 12-7.

After going scoreless in the first inning, the Highlanders put a run on the board over the next three innings to take a 3-0 lead. Two of those three runs came on solo home runs by Dean Miller and Connor Cannon.

It marked Cannon's team-leading fourth home run of the season, while Miller belted his third home run.

Trevor Bateson, making his first start of the year, was outstanding. He allowed one runs on two hits in four innings. Over those four frames he tossed 68 pitches.

Head coach Troy Percival decided to go to the bullpen and bring in Alec Arnone, who didn't fair well. Over 1 2/3 innings, he allowed six runs (four earned), including a three-run home run to tie the score at 4 in the fifth inning.

In the sixth, the Rebels gained the lead for the first time and never looked back notching four runs to move on top 8-4.

Yeager Taylor and Jacob Shanks gave the Highlanders some hope in the seventh frame as Taylor notched an RBI on a sac-fly and Shanks brought in two more on a double to center.

The Rebels added four more in the seventh to secure the win 12-7.

It is a quick turnaround for the Highlanders who start conference play on Friday against UC Davis in a three-game series.
