DAVIS, Calif. – The baseball team had a strong offensive showing at UC Davis on Sunday collecting 10 hits but it wasn't enough as they lost to the Aggies 8-6. The loss drops the Highlanders to 8-17 and 1-2 in the Big West.
The Highlanders jumped out on top quick in the first inning by scoring three runs with two outs. The old adage "good teams go with two," served to be true in this case as senior Yeagar Taylor belted a single up the middle to score sophomore
Nathan Webb. Junior
Connor Cannon followed up the single with a two-run shot to give UC Riverside a 3-0 lead after the top of the first.
Cannon came up again in the top of the third with the Highlanders leading 3-1 and senior
Dean Miller on third; Miller had hit a double down the left field line and advanced on a wild pitch. Cannon belted a deep double to left center to add to the lead to make it 4-1.
The pitching staff was unable to hold the lead and fell behind 4-8 going into the last inning. Freshman
Alec Arnone led-off with a pinch hit double. After Webb flied out, sophomore
Cole Pofek pinch hit for junior
Travis Bohall. The move paid off as Pofek roped a two-run homerun to cut the lead to 8-6.
Unfortunately, the Highlanders weren't able to build off the Pofek momentum and fell to the Aggies for a final score of 8-6.
Riverside had four doubles: Miller, Cannon, Arnone and freshman
Jacob Shanks. The team was also active on the bases with three steals by Miller, Bohall and senior
Justin Mannens.
Dean Miller extended his hitting streak to nine games; five of those games Miller collected two or more hits. Cannon's homerun put him in fifth place in the Big West with 5 homers.
The Highlanders will aim to avenge an early season loss against the Toreros of San Diego. The game will be at San Diego at 6:00pm on Tuesday, April 2
