Women's Tennis Tops Weber State 5-2

RIVERSIDE, Calif.—The UC Riverside Women's Tennis Team took full advantage of a dry Thursday afternoon as the Highlanders defeated Weber State 5-2. The final score was not indicative of the battle that occurred between UCR and WSU as it nearly came down to the final singles matchup. In the end, three comeback singles victories would lead the Highlanders to their third win of the season.

Weber State opened doubles play with a statement taking court two 6-0, but UC Riverside was quick to respond on the remaining courts. The powerful team of junior Sara Khattab and sophomore Tia Elpusan tied the round with a 6-3 on court one and the duo of freshman Lindsey Gelinas and sophomore Lauren Wolfe snagged the doubles point with a 6-4 win on three.

Down 1-0, the Wildcats took court five to open singles play and iced the match, but freshman Mahli Silpachai regianed the lead for the Highlanders taking a 6-2, 6-3 win on court three.

Elpusan battled on court two and was bested in her first set, but did not quit coming back to take a huge 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory on court two.

Weber State would grab court one to cut the UCR lead to 3-2 and turn everyone's attention to courts four and six, where another pair of three set fights were taking place.

Freshman Natalie Shamma found herself in a truly heated contest on court four, and after being edged out 6-7 in her first set, turned the tables on her opponent to earn a 6-7, 6-1, 6-2 triumph and give her team the overall match. Khattab would come out on top of her court six matchup 6-7, 6-2, 6-4 to give the Highlanders a 5-2 victory.

Weber State was just two sets away from running away in singles play, but a focused UCR team was more determined in the end earning its third win.
