Baseball Takes 5-1 Loss to Rider

SAN FRANCISCO—Right-hander Jeremiah Priddy had another solid start, but the offense couldn't get much going and the UC Riverside Baseball team took a 5-1 loss to Rider University on Friday.

The game went scoreless through the first four innings, before Rider got on the board in the top of the fifth with an RBI double by David Bermudez and then an RBI single to right field with two outs by Joe Simone.

The Highlanders (6-8) lone run came on a solo home run by Dean Miller to left center field in the bottom of the fifth inning. It marked his first home run of the season and sixth RBI.

Priddy took his second loss of the season, but it was still a quality start. He scattered three runs on seven hits over seven innings. He also struck out six batters. In the zone the entire start, he tossed 97 pitches, 68 for strikes.

Priddy has now gone at least five innings in three of his four starts and has allowed no more than four earned runs in a start.

"Jeremiah threw seven strong innings, but our offense couldn't string together any hits," head coach Troy Percival said. "Rider's starter had us off balance the entire game."

UCR managed just two hits on the day and two walks, while striking out 11 times. Much of that was due to the dominance of Rider starter Pete Soporowski, who tossed a season-high seven innings.

Yeager Taylor collected a single in the second inning increasing his hit streak to six games. The most consistent hitter so far this season, the first baseman is batting .320 with one home run and six RBIs.

Rider got two unearned insurance runs in the top of the ninth inning with reliever Abbott Haffar on the mound. Simone singled to left field with two outs, collecting two RBIs.

The team plays San Francisco on Saturday at 11 a.m. Shamus Lyons gets the nod for the Highlanders. He's 2-1 with a 4.50 ERA.

The team has played San Francisco a total of 30 times, going 22-8. The last time the two teams played each other was in 2015. UCR swept the three-game series.

"We need to be better tomorrow and Sunday to get back to .500," said Percival.
