McRae's Game-Winner Sends Men's Basketball to the Big West Tournament

DAVIS, Calif.—The UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team is off to the Big West Tournament after a 71-70 victory on the road at UC Davis Saturday night. The final game of the regular season would come down to the final seconds as the Highlanders inbounded from the sideline and sophomore Dominick Pickett dished a perfect pass to freshman Callum McRae who turned and scored the game-winner with under two seconds to go.

UCR held control throughout thanks to an efficient .625 shooting performance that granted the team a 38-28 lead heading into the half. Leading scorer, junior guard Dikymbe Martin, made his presence felt in the first period scoring 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting and Pickett followed just behind him with 11 points going 4-for-4.

The two teams traded punches for most of the second half until late in the game where the Aggies put on a solid run with under two minutes to go and took just their first lead since the first minute of play 70-69. With 3.9 seconds to go, Pickett hit a posting McRae who spun and dribbled to the other side of the rim tossing a up a perfect hook shot to win the game.

The Highlanders ended the game with another strong performance from deep connecting on 11-of-23 threes on their way to a .529 shooting night. The team also did its job on the glass out-rebounding the Aggies 28-23.

Four Highlanders ended in double figures as Martin led the team with 17, Pickett finished with 16, and bigs Menno Dijkstra and McRae collected 12 and 11, respectively. Dijkstra also collected 10 boards, completing the double-double, and Pickett ended with nine.

This win solidifies a spot at the Honda Center for the Highlanders who take the 8th seed and will face top ranked UC Irvine Thursday night.
