Softball Completes Last Inning Comeback for Fourth Straight Win

RIVERSIDE, Calif.— The Highlanders have redefined the term "clutch" this weekend as the UC Riverside Softball Team walked-off for the third straight game to earn their fourth straight win. This time was neither a run-rule or an extra-innings tie-breaker like yesterday's pair of victories, but a come from behind win over Houston who led 3-0 heading into the bottom of the 7th inning.

"It's so great to see the resiliency and the belief set in, especially with our younger players," Head Coach Nikki Palmer said. "Over the past few years our bets have really established a culture of being clutch late in the game so its incredible to see the younger players get on board with that and start trusting the work they've put in."

The defensive efforts came down to a pitching committee of junior Jacy Boles and freshman Megan Casper. Boles earned the start tossing 3.1 innings and allowing just two runs, while Casper entered in the fourth inning closing out the game with just four hits and a run allowed.

The Cougars spread their offense out over the game collecting a single run in second, fourth, and sixth to take a 3-0 lead in to the bottom of the seventh.

Junior Kayla Curtan led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch, before getting knocked in on a single by freshman Haylee Kela for the team's first run of the day.

An error would put freshman Nadia Witt on and heads-up base running by Kela cut the Cougar lead 3-2. With two outs, junior Danielle Ortega stepped to the plate hitting a single and Witt, would come all the way around to score from second to tie the game at 3-3.

Junior Brittney Garcia was the next up ending the game with a walk off single through the middle to score Ortega and give UCR another walk-off win.
