Prime Pitching Grants Softball the First Ever Crosstown Showdown

RIVERSIDE, Calif.—The first ever softball Crosstown Showdown belongs to the Highlanders as the UC Riverside Softball Team (21-15) downed CBU (16-24) 3-2 at Funk Stadium. The game was a true pitching duel as despite five runs coming across, only one was earned.

Freshman Megan Casper earned the start in the circle for the Highlanders and did not disappoint tossing four complete and allowing just two hit and zero earned on her way to her seventh win of the season. Junior Jacy Boles would make her 12th relief appearance of the year tossing the final three innings and allowing just one earned for her third save this year. She

UCR got on the board first and never surrendered the lead adding runs in the second, third, and fifth frames. Junior Kayla Curtan broke the scoreless tie in the second scoring on a Lancer error and just an inning later, junior Emma Ramelot made it 2-0 lacing single back at the circle to score junior Danielle Ortega from second base.

The Lancers cut the lead in the fifth scoring an unearned run, but UCR quickly stretched it back out to 3-2 on heads up base running by senior Hannah Rodriguez.

CBU added its second and final run in the sixth, but dominant pitching by Boles would see the Lancers shutout in the seventh to hold on to a 3-2 win.

Ramelot finished the day going 2-for-3 with an RBI and Rodriguez, Ortega, and Sarah Parten all added singles.
