SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Senior Andrew Spilman played consistently great golf the past two days at the Sandpiper Golf Course in Santa Barbara, California. This excellent play saw him jump up from fourth place to winning the tournament in the final round. Spilman shot an impressive -3 (213) on the tournament and won by two strokes.
The senior led the UC Riverside team to second place finish with a combined score of +8 (870) and only fell to the host team, Santa Barbara. The team was steady throughout the three rounds of play with scores of 290, 287 and 293 over the two days. The Highlanders finished with the best third round score of +5 to jump from fourth place up to second.
Riverside also led all teams in par 4 scoring at +22 with the second closest team four strokes behind that. That consistent play on the tough scoring holes is what gave the team a chance at the win and what allowed Spilman to take the top spot. The team also finished with the second most eagles on the tournament with two.
Junior Tyler Moore had a solid third round shooting one under par for a score of 71 which was the best score for the Highlanders on Tuesday. Moore moved up 16 spots on the final day and finished tied for 12th. Senior Michael Wong finished the tournament tied for eighth shooting +2 (218).
The Sandpiper was a great preparation tournament for the Highlanders as Spilman and co. look to continue their consistent play into the Big West tournament in two weeks. The Big West tournament will be played April 29-30 at the Wailua Golf Course in Kauai, Hawai'i.
