Baseball Defends The Plex vs Bakersfield

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Plex has been good to the UC Riverside Baseball team this year. The team moved to 6-6 at home with their 6-3 victory over CSU Bakersfield on Tuesday night. Coming off a series at New Mexico where the Highlanders scored 37 in three games, the team relied on their pitching staff in this one.

Heading into the bottom of the third inning down 1-0, the Highlanders scored four runs of their own highlighted by timely hitting and good baseball. The team received RBI singles from seniors Dean Miller and Yeager Taylor in the inning. The fourth run was capped off by a sacrifice fly by freshman Jacob Shanks.

Shanks also doubled in the fifth inning to score Dean Miller as he gave Riverside an insurance run to put the team up 5-2.

Junior left-hander Hayden Petrovick notched his third win of the season as he pitched two scoreless innings without allowing a hit and striking out one. This was Petrovick's fourth straight appearance without allowing a run spanning over 6 1/3 innings.

Freshman Andre Granillo collected his first career save in the win as he recorded a strike out for all three outs. The freshman's scoreless appearance improved his scoreless innings streak to five.

The Highlanders will have their work cut out for them this weekend as they host top-10 ranked UCSB. The first game vs UCSB will start at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. ESPN3 will be covering the Friday, April 26 and Saturday, April 27 games.
