2019 Big West Tournament Bracket
RIVERSIDE, Calif.—The regular season has come to a close and the Big West's six men's tennis programs are off to the Indian Wells Tennis Garden for the 2019 Big West Championship. The fifth-seeded Highlanders will have a unique challenge in their path to the finals as they face the fourth-seeded UC Davis Aggies, who they played just five days ago. The first round matchup is set for 9:00 AM this Thursday and the winner will go on to face the No. 1 UC Santa Barbara Gauchos.
Last Friday, the Highlanders fell 4-1 to the Aggies at home, but UCR showed a lot of promise holding leads and competing at the lower courts before played was halted. Junior Gilbert Chung took a dominant win on court three defeating Nil Giraldez in straight sets of 6-3, 6-1.
HIGHLANDER HISTORYÂ
UCR's 5-2 win over Norfolk State will go down in history as the Highlanders collected their 17th win of the season to set a program record yet again. This is the fourth straight year the team has surpassed its win total from the previous season and they are now up to 19 on the season.
GILL IS ILLÂ
Gilbert Chung has been on an absolute tear this year posting a 28-5Â record and winning 22 of his last 23 singles matches on court three for UCR. He heads into the Big West Tournament with a 3-1 singles records against conference opponents.
WHELAN AND DEALIN'Â
A perfect week of singles play for Andreas Whelan-Merediz enough to earn the freshman his first career conference honor, as he was named Big West Athlete of the Week on Tuesday, April 2nd. The UCR rookie led the team to an outstanding 6-1 record in their annual east coast road trip posting a 7-0 singles record and adding three doubles victories with senior Kyle McCann.
EAST COAST SPRING BREAKÂ
The Highlanders enjoyed yet another successful trip to the east coast this past month as the team went 6-1 and broke the all-time win record of the fourth consecutive season.
