INDIAN WELLS, Calif.—An incredible season came to a close Thursday afternoon for the UC Riverside Men's Tennis Team as the fifth-seeded Highlanders fell 4-1 to fourth-seeded UC Davis in the first round of the Big West Tournament.
UCR finishes the season with a record of 20-16, the best mark in program history, and became just the second Big West team to ever eclipse 20 wins. Seniors
Kyle McCann and
Anderson Ju played their final match in blue and gold and will both graduate on the top-10 all time wins list.
Coach Johansson's Take
"UC Davis is a well run program with a great coach - so hats off to them. I'm proud of the guys and their efforts today. We definitely had our chances starting in doubles - winning #3 and having 5-5 in both 1 and 2 doubles- thought we could sneak out the doubles point - but we didn't. Vignesh played a great match at #5 and made the score 1-1. Down 3-1 with three matches in the third set I saw a lot of hard fighting from the guys. Kyle was 5-5 in third set and Gilbert up 3-0 when Nabil lost a hard fought 6-3 third set. We aren't a pushover team any longer and we will only grow stronger next season - and I'm already looking forward to comeback here in 2020. Guys should feel good about themselves and the progress they made this year."
