Baseball Breaks Out at Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -  The offense broke out in a big way and a pitcher-by-committee effort led the UC Riverside Baseball team to a convincing victory at Cal State Bakersfield. It was a big win that capped off the team's 16 game road trip.

The Highlanders came out swinging early as the team scored three quick runs in their first at-bat. It was a string of four straight hits that got the team going and it was all started off with a single by freshman catcher Taylor Juline. Juline was followed up by red hot senior Dean Miller who singled through the right side. Senior Yeagar Taylor then ripped an RBI double down the right field line who was followed up by junior Connor Cannon who smoked an RBI single.

The scoring didn't stop there as the Highlanders scored three more runs in the second inning then two more in the third inning to take a commanding 8-0 lead. Miller hit his team-leading seventh home run in the second inning and sophomore Nathan Webb hit his second home run of the season in the third inning.

The team received great performances from multiple players on Tuesday night. Juline finished two for three with three walks and an RBI. Miller collected four hits and had three RBIs and Webb matched Miller with three RBIs for himself. Senior Matt Hardy had a nice game himself as he had three hits and an RBI. Freshman Alec Arnone also collected two hits for the Highlanders.

It wasn't just an offensive showing in Bakersfield for Riverside, the pitching staff got in on the action. The Highlanders threw seven different pitchers at the Roadrunners with great effectiveness. Senior Jared Noonan earned the win but the staff also received shutout innings from sophomores Jeremiah Priddy and Abbott Haffar, junior Hayden Petrovick and freshman Trevor Bateson, who struck out three batters.

Cannon extended his hitting streak to 10 games with his effort tonight. He will look to continue the streak this weekend at home versus Hawai'i.

The team will finally play in front of the home crowd in Riverside at the Plex this weekend vs. Hawai'i. The games on Friday, April 12th and Saturday, April 13th will be played at 6:00 p.m. while Sunday, April 14th's game will be played at 1:00 p.m.
