Softball Takes Two from UCSB

SANTA BARBARA, Calif.—The UC Riverside Softball Team bounced back in a major way Saturday afternoon as the Highlanders earned a pair of wins sweeping the opening doubleheader at UC Santa Barbara. UCR took game one 6-3 before downing the Gauchos 8-2 in the second to take the series on the first day.

Game One
Junior Jacy Boles drew the start in game one and picked up her 11th win of the season tossing five solid innings and allowing just three runs, while striking out three. Junior Melanie Olmos would also make an appearance pitching the final two innings on her way to a six out scoreless save.

The Highlander bats got going early as UCR put up a four-run first frame. Junior Sarah Parten did a majority of the lifting crushing a three-run homer over the center-field wall, her first of the year. Olmos added an RBI single to score junior Hannah Rodriguez.

UCSB answered with a run in the first and two in the fifth, but that would conclude the team's scoring efforts for game one.

A pair of Highlander freshmen in Nadia Witt and Haylee Kela added insurance runs with back-to-back RBI doubles in the sixth.

Game Two
Olmos would take the circle in game two picking up her fourth conference win tossing 4.2 innings and allowing just two runs on fourth hits. Boles would switch back for the final 2.1 innings and mirrored Olmos's game performance by shutting down the Gauchos and retiring the final seven batters in order.

UCSB took an early lead scoring a run in the first frame, but UCR was quick to respond with eight runs in the next four innings, including a five-run second inning.

Junior Danielle Ortega showed out in game two going 2-for-3 with a walk and four RBI and senior Amanda Lynch bounced back from a tough game one going 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI. Junior Emma Ramelot added two runs and an RBI.
