Women's Soccer Bested in Crosstown Showdown

RIVERSIDE, Calif.— Despite breaking through for its first goal of the season Sunday night, the UC Riverside Women's Soccer Team (0-2-0) fell in the Crosstown Showdown to CBU (2-0-0) 3-1.

The Highlanders' home opener was electric all night with a packed UCR Soccer Stadium as the two teams battled in their first ever Division I meeting.

The Lancers got out in front early with a tough shot by Amy Aquino who gave her Lancers a 1-0 lead hitting from 25 yards out. Erin Gallagher would earn the assist on the setup.

The remainder of the half was a battle of defense and wits and both teams remained scoreless despite UCR tallying eight shots and CBU putting up seven.

Out of the half, the Highlanders were quick to respond. In the 48th minute, sophomore Leigh Polson broke through with her first career collegiate goal, an equalizer from inside the 18 yard box on a great through ball from junior Alexis Vera who picked up the assist.

Just over two minutes later, CBU's Elisa Soderholm would capitalize on a rebound to regain the lead. Ari Coronado would add the Lancers' third and final goal in the 78th minute to clinch the match.

Both teams' offenses were pushing the limits through the 90 minutes with the Highalnders finishing with 12 shots, 4 on frame, and the Lancers notching 14 shots, 4 on goal.

UCR will look to bounce back this Thursday at Cal State Bakersfield.
