Women's Volleyball Outlasted in Home Opener

RIVERSIDE— The UC Riverside Women's Volleyball Team (4-6) got out to a hot start in its home opener at the UCR Classic Friday night, but could not push all the way through, being edged out in the middle sets. The match would go to visiting Penn (7-1), which clawed out the final three games to take it 3-1.

From the first serve, the first set was a back and forth battle, with the Quakers maintaining a lead late in the set, until the Highlanders stormed back for a 26-24 victory to take the the early lead. The game saw a total 14 ties and lead changes.

This pattern would follow in the next two sets as well as both went to extra points, and saw combined total of 19 ties and lead changes, but unfortunately Penn had the upper hand in each, just outlasting the Highlanders who point after point kept the contest tight. The Quakers would grab the lead taking set two 28-26 and set three 26-24.

The fourth and final set was the most decisive as Penn got out to a large lead, but even then the Highlanders found a way to make it interesting falling by just six, 25-19.

It was another career night for freshman Amarachi Osuji who led all players with 19 total kills. She has now collected 48 kills in her last three matches, giving her a k/set line of 4.36. Sophomore Dejah Dade was the one to find her at every opportunity posting a game high 29 assists, a career mark for her as well.

UC Riverside will look to finish the non-conference state on the right foot tomorrow afternoon when the team faces Seattle at 5 PM at SRC Arena.
