RIVERSIDE, Calif.— The UC Riverside Women's Basketball team closed out the last decade with a hard-fought victory, and on Thursday night in the SRC Arena, they got the decade started in style with a gritty, 75-70, win over UC Davis in the 2020 Big West Conference opener.

UC Riverside (5-10, 1-0) had four players score in double-figures and was led by senior Jannon Otto's 26 points and nine rebounds. Keilanei Cooper tallied her second double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Marina Ewodo had 15 points and grabbed seven boards.
Lauryn Pointer, who is known for her fearlessness when it comes taking charges, provided a pivotal spark off the bench for the Highlanders, scoring 10 points (2-5, 3pt) in the win."This was a total team effort tonight. I'm proud of how we held off their late rallies and continued to execute down the stretch,"said Head Coach Seyram Bell.

UC Davis (5-9, 0-1) also had four players score in double figures. They were led by Mackenzie Trpcic's 15 points in the loss.

The Highlanders committed a season-low 10 turnovers and made a season-high 17 free-throws out of their 20 attempts, while decisively winning the battle of the boards, 48-36. "We had very specific goals in key areas of tonight's game, and we hit on a number of them, limiting our turnovers, defense, and rebounding were the main ones." Coach Bell added.

After a first half that was played at close range and ended with the Highlanders holding a two-point advantage, 29-27.

In the second half, the Highlanders withstood multiple Aggie rallies by responding with timely buckets from Cooper, Otto and Pointer in the fourth quarter.

On UC Davis' final possession, trailing by three, 73-70, with 18 seconds to play, they missed on two three-point attempts. Fittingly, Otto collected the rebound was fouled immediately. She calmly sank both attempts to remain perfect at the line for the night (6-6), and seal the,75-70, victory in front of a loud and engaged home crowd.

Otto, last week's Big West Conference player of the week, enjoyed a special Diabetes Awareness Night - she is also a Type 1 Diabetic
