Riverside, Calif.-The UC Riverside Women's Basketball team was done in a cold-shooting third period in their 62-52 home loss to Cal Poly Thursday night.

Daphne Gnago's inspired play led the Highlanders as she tallied 14 of her team-high 15 points in the second half. She also pulled down six rebounds, handed out two assists and had two steals of which she took the distance for a score.

"Some nights you do everything right and the ball just doesn't go in the basket for you. These ladies competed on each and every possession tonight. I'm proud of them for that." said Head Coach Seyram Bell.

UC Riverside (8-17, 4-8) usually is troubled by turnovers, however, in the third period they had just four. It was the 4-13 shooting, 0-3 from distance and 2-5 from the charity stripe. All of which were uncharacteristic for the Highlanders, who shot no worse than 46.2 percent from the field in the other three quarters.

Cal Poly (7-16, 4-7) conversely shot 7-14 from the floor and made both of their free-throw attempts on the way to outscoring the Highlanders 16-10 in the period and carried a seven-point advantage into the fourth.

In the fourth the Highlanders would have a spurt in which they outscored the Mustangs 8-2 to make 58-52. In the final 2:31 of the game, UC Riverside missed on their shot attempts and had a turnover. Cal Poly would go on to claim the 62-52 victory.

Jannon Otto joined Gnago in double figures with 11 points while Marina Ewodo had eight points to go with seven rebounds and four assists.

Looking Forward
The Highlanders will hit the road for a Saturday afternoon affair at UC Santa Barbara slated for 2pm.
