CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – Dropping a pair of games, the University of California, Riverside (UCR) women's softball team concluded its first day of competition at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic (MNCC) at Big League Dreams.
Game One
In its first game of Thursday, UCR (6-5) lost, 6-3, to the designated home team, the University of New Mexico (UNM) Lobos. UNM (6-4) broke a scoreless tie with three runs in the bottom of the third. Both teams traded runs in the fourth inning before the Highlanders tallied twice in the fifth to get to within, 4-3. The Lobos scored twice in the sixth to account for the final of 6-3. Senior PR-DP Kayla Curtan (Roseville, Calif. / Woodcreek HS) entered the game in the fourth as a pinch runner and scored on RBI double to left field by sophomore LF Nadia Witt (Keizer, Ore. / McNary HS). In the fifth, Curtan delivered a two-run single to center field to get the Highlanders closer at 4-3. Sophomore starting RHP Chrys Hildebrand (Yorba Linda, Calif. / Esperanza HS) went the first 2.0+ innings and allowed three runs (earned) on two hits and two walks, but struck out five as her record fell to 0-1.
Game Two
The Brigham Young University (BYU) Cougars scored once in the first and twice in the third to take a 3-0 lead. In the fourth, senior P-DP Melanie Olmos (Riverside, Calif. / Grand Terrace HS) led off with a ringing double to center field. After advancing to third on a ground out, Olmos scored on a single to center field by freshman SS Marissa Burk (Fontana, Calif. / Fontana HS). Witt and freshman 2B Lauryn Garewal (Banning, Calif. / Banning HS) went two for three for UCR. Olmos went two for four, as did senior 3B Emma Ramelot (Riverside, Calif. / Martin Luther King HS) as the Highlanders out-hit BYU, 10-2.

UCR continues play in the MNCC on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 21, and 22. On Friday, UCR will meet Mississippi State University (MSU) at 3:30 p.m. before greeting the University of Utah Utes at 6 p.m. On Saturday, Feb. 22, UCR will conclude tournament play when it takes on the Oregon State University (OSU) Beavers at 7 p.m.
