Box Score 2 LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The University of California Riverside Highlanders wrapped up their two-day tournament at UNLV with a win and a loss. They entered day two of the clinch format tournament 4-4 after dropping two matches the previous day to Hawai'i and UNLV. Despite the final outcome, several Highlanders battled through the double headers and played strong tennis. On day two they faced New Mexico State and Southern Utah.
In the morning against New Mexico State, the Highlanders dropped the match 0-4, but fought a tough battle that isn't reflected in the final score.
Gilbert Chung,
Andreas Whelan-Merediz and
Nikita Horunzhy were all up in their three unfinished matches when New Mexico State clinched the win.
The last match of the tournament would be a battle to the finish against Southern Utah, with UCR coming out on top with the 4-3 win. Securing the Doubles point would prove crucial for the Highlanders in taking this match.
Gilbert Chung and
Jayson Blando were able to come from a set behind and win their respective singles flights. Head Coach
Mattias Johansson said, "It was nice to see freshman
Jayson Blando showing no nerves at 6-6 battling in the deciding tiebreaker set to clinch the victory. Some of these guys have played up to 14 sets in two days, I am impressed by the team effort to get the win."
The Highlanders advance to 5-5 this season and return to Riverside with some time to recover. They will travel to the East Coast in a week and a half where they will play five matches over four days. Their first match will be in Baltimore, Md. against Coppin State University at 11:00 AM PT.
