Women’s Tennis Battles to Defeat UCSD 6-1

Box Score RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The UC Riverside Highlanders returned to the SRC Tennis Courts on February 8 to take on the UC San Diego Tritons. Coming off of a Wednesday win against Westmont College that brought them to 2-3 overall, the Highlanders were out to spark a winning streak and hit .500 on the season.

Pairs Tia Elpusan / Sara Khattab and Lindsey Gelinas / Lauren Wolfe secured the Doubles point with wins in flights #1 and #3 respectively. After Doubles #2 finished first with a win for UCSD, Gelinas and Wolfe clinched a 6-3 win in the #3 spot to even the fight for the doubles point. Elpusan and Khattab fought to clinch their #1 flight, ultimately battling to a 7-5 victory and securing the Doubles point for UCR.

Khattab would go on to win the clinching Singles match in the #4 spot, defeating her opponent 6-1, 2-6, 6-3. The Highlanders took down the Tritons 6-1, and advance to a 3-3 record overall. Head Coach Mark Henry was optimistic about the fight in his team saying, "UC San Diego really pushed us but we responded well. Sara Khattab played great and won the clinching match for us."

The Highlanders have almost two weeks off until they return to the courts, even on the season, facing Big West rivals Long Beach State on February 21 at home in Riverside, Calif. at 1:30PM.
