RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Sweeping its first double header (in its initial attempt) of the season, the University of California, Riverside (UCR) women's softball team knocked off the visiting California State University, Bakersfield (CSUB) Roadrunners, 8-0 & 9-6, Saturday (March 7) in its annual UCR Classic softball tournament at the Amy S. Harrison Field on the UCR campus.
UCR (11-12) opened the bottom of the first inning with three runs, two of which came on a one-out, two-run home run to left-center fielded by junior C
Kennedi Sorensen (Valencia, Calif. / New Mexico State U.). With two outs, freshman SS
Marissa Burk (Fontana, Calif. / Fontana HS) followed with a solo home run, also to left-center field for the 3-0 Highlander lead.
In the second stanza, UCR also scored three runs. Once again, Burk had a big blow, a two-run double as UCR led, 6-0. UCR scored once in the fourth and fifth frames for the 8-0 final score.
UCR starting sophomore RHP
Chrys Hildebrand (Yorba Linda, Calif. / Esperanza HS) went the distanced (5.0 innings) and only allowed two hits (both to CSUB LF Katie Jackson), one walk and had six strikeouts to improve to 3-1.
Senior RF
Danielle Ortega (Granada Hills, Calif. / Bishop Alemany HS) went three for four to aid the Highlanders' 12-hit attack.

In the nightcap, UCR had a more of a battle on its hands as CSUB (1-12) led, 1-0, on a solo home run in the top of the second inning. Undaunted, the Highlanders scored three in the third for a 3-1 lead only to see the Roadrunners tie the game at 3-3 with two tallies in the fourth.
UCR took the lead for good at 6-3 in the bottom of the fourth, thanks to a three-run round tripper by senior
Sarah Parten (Bellflower, Calif. / Mayfair HS).
After CSUB crept to within, 6-5, and, 7-6, the Highlanders scored two in the sixth for the 9-6 final score.
UCR sophomore RHP
Megan Casper (Laguna Hills, Calif. / Laguna Hills HS), who was originally listed as the starting pitcher, came on in relief in the fourth inning to gain the victory and improve to 2-4. Junior RHP
Caitlyn Rivera (Northridge, Calif. / Loyola Marymount U.) pitched the final 2-2/3 innings to gain her first save.
Again, it was Ortega setting the pace as she went three for four with three runs scored as the Highlanders had 11 hits.
