Softball Drops Season Opener 5-0 To LMU

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The UC Riverside Softball team got the 2021 season underway today and fell to LMU 5-0. Saturday's competition kicked off the spring sports season and represented the first return to action since the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Highlanders' 2020 season was halted in the middle of a five-game winning streak. After today's season opener, they'll continue against the Lions in a double-header on Sunday to complete the three-game series. UCR had just a few weeks to prepare for the beginning of the 2021 abbreviated season.

In the first inning, Chrys Hildebrand took the circle for the Highlanders. She started strong, getting the first two outs of the game on just five pitches. UCR got themselves into trouble after giving up two runs on two hits before getting out of the inning.

Defense improved throughout the game but the offense lagged, as UCR bats struggled to get going. The Lions held the Highlanders to just three hits on the day. The Highlanders' best opportunity to score was in the sixth inning, which was cut short when pinch runner Ally Troche was thrown out at home plate.

Head Coach Nikki Palmer said, "I was really proud of our team today for working together and facing a challenging opponent. For having a short amount of time to train in our practices, it was good to see our players come out and use their shear athleticism and their strong game sense to work together."

As for her outlook for tomorrow, Coach Palmer added, "We're looking to come out stronger tomorrow, swing the bats more, and keep fighting."

Next up for the Highlanders is a doubleheader with LMU with first pitch set for noon on Sunday, February 28, at Amy S. Harrison Field with the second game scheduled to begin 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one.
