Highlanders Drop Slugfest to Titans in Series Finale

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Sunday's series finale between UC Riverside and Cal State Fullerton was nothing short of an offensive clinic, as the two teams combined for 24 runs on 33 hits.

UCR was able to put eight on the board against the Titans in the matinee, but weren't able to salvage a series split with a 16-8 defeat at the Riverside Sports Complex.

Jacob Shanks recorded his eighth multi-hit game of the season, going 3 for 5 in the series finale with a run in the third inning and a two-run RBI double in the eighth. The redshirt sophomore now owns a six-game hitting streak, dating back to March 20 at CSU Bakersfield. Shanks was one of four Highlanders to record multi-hit games on Sunday, and recorded three hits for the second time in the series after going 3 for 4 in Friday's series opener.

UCR found their place on the scoreboard quickly, as Dylan Orick singled to left center field for his team-leading 15th RBI of the season to score Travis Bohall from third. Bohall led off the inning with a double down the left field line on a 1-2 pitch and finished the afternoon going 1 for 3 with two runs, as the Highlanders put up a three-spot in the third inning to pull within 5-4.

Cole Pofek, whose fourth-inning triple brought home Ely Stuart, was also credited with two runs to match his season high set on March 7 against UC Irvine. Stuart finished the day going 2 for 4 with two runs.

UC Riverside plated another run in the seventh inning on a four-pitch walk by Nathan Webb, but left the bases loaded after Anthony McFarland grounded into the 5-4-3 double play.

Anthony Mata's hit streak reached seven games on Sunday on a second-inning single into left center field. The shortstop's 2-for-3 afternoon also gave him his fourth multi-hit game of the season.

Next, the Highlanders head to UC Davis to continue Big West competition with an identical four-game set beginning Friday, April 2 at 2:30 PM.
