Box Score RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Sunday saw UC Riverside win its opening doubles match and its top singles outing before Cal State Northridge (6-3, 3-2 Big West) defeated the Highlanders (0-6, 0-5 Big West) in clinch play, 4-1, at SRC Tennis Courts.
Senior Tia Elpsuan won her Court 1 singles match, 6-3 1-6 6-2, over Ana Isabel Fraile Toboso after teaming up with junior Pham in the first doubles slot to win their outing, 6-0, over Fraile Toboso and Victoria Santibanez Luna.
Following UCR's opening doubles win, Serina Saltzen and Sydney Tran were defeated by Jacquie Tan and Jenna Dorian, and Mahli Silpachai and Natalie Shamma lost to Magdalena Hedrzak and Sasha Turchak, both by the score of 2-6.
In singles results, prior to Elpusan's win on Court 1, Shamma lost to Turchak and Lazzaroni fell to Dorian, both at 4-6 3-6, followed by Silpachai, who lost to Hedrzak, 6-7 2-6.
Due to clinch rules, the last loss put an end to UCR's chances on Courts 4 and 6, where Pham was battling Tan, 6-7 3-5, and Saltzen was leading Santibanez Luna, 7-6-5-6.
The Highlanders have six days to prepare for the next event, a road visit to UC Davis for Big West play next Saturday, April 17, starting at 11 a.m. PT.
