Women's Track and Field

Big Marks, National Records at Triton Invitational

LA JOLLA, Calif. – Saturday afternoon was a record setting one for the University of California, Riverside (UCR) track & field program.  FR Shiloh Corrales-Nelson broke the eight-year old  Filipino National Record in the Women's Hammer, and won the Triton Invitational with a 6th Round toss of 50.63m, 166'3".  Coach Candace Fuller summed up Shiloh's performance by saying, "We are very proud of Shiloh's performance today.  She came back on her last throw of the day to earn this record and we know she has much farther to go in this event!"  Earlier in the afternoon, Shiloh earned a sixth place finish in the discus and a second place finish in the shot put as well.  Her second place toss of 13.03m or 42'9" was also a lifetime best in the event.

On the oval, the distance harriers had a really strong showing as well. Andrew Jackson brought home an event win, with his second fastest 400m performance of his career, crossing the tape in 48.77 seconds.  Dari Miramontes won the women's 1500m in a personal best time, 4:45.59, securing her second win in as many weeks. She was followed closely by teammate Daisy Romero who stopped the clock second overall, 4:50.29.  In the women's 800m, FR Carolinh Calvert ran a four second lifetime best, 2:15.83, good enough for second place overall.  A few seconds back, Miramontes doubled back to a fourth place, 2:20.92 (five second lifetime best) finish.

"A lot of good things happened today at UCSD in the distance group.  Dari won her second race in two weeks, and also blasted a huge PB in the 800m, Carolinh stuck her nose in a fast race against SDSU's school record holder at 800m, Sammie V. ran a nice new PB and Justin Briscoe did as well.  I felt like the whole group showed up to compete and that is all you can ask for in an environment where it was a little windy, not a ton of teams in attendance.  I had hoped to see us race hard and that is what we got!," mentioned Distance Coach Rob Hansen.

The Highlanders will be back in action next Friday and Saturday at Azusa Pacific for the Bryan Clay Invitational, one of California's largest track and field invites.
