RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Consistency at the plate was the tone for Marissa Burk and Kennedi Sorensen on Friday afternoon.
UC Riverside found offensive production from the duo, but only in the third inning as UCR fell 12-3 to Cal State Fullerton at Amy S. Harrison Field to open the weekend series.
"We learned a lot today and we can really grow from some things that happened," head coach Nikki Palmer said. "I'm proud of the fight we showed in the beginning of the game against a tough opponent."
The Highlanders trailed early 3-0, but made up for it with a three-spot in the third inning. Gigi Araki worked a full count into a walk to lead off the frame, followed by Kat Montuya wearing one to put two runners on with no outs. After Lauryn Garewal reached on a fielder's choice, back-to-back doubles from Marissa Burk and Kennedi Sorensen brought the game level.
Burk went 2 for 3 for the afternoon with a run and an RBI, extending her on-base streak to five games. With her third-inning double, the sophomore is now the fifth Highlander this season to reach double digit hits.
Sorensen's RBI double gave her five on the year - a team high - while also extending her on-base streak to 12.
Chrys Hildebrand went 4.1 innings for UCR in the circle, racking up four strikeouts and allowing just three hits on 93 total pitches.
