UCR Comes from Behind to Beat UC San Diego

Box Score RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The UC Riverside men's tennis team used its second consecutive doubles point and key singles performances to end the regular season with a 4-3 comeback win over UC San Diego on Saturday afternoon at the SRC Tennis Courts.

The comeback victory was the first for UCR since April 6.

" It was overall a very solid double performance and got the point there again, which is nice to see," UCR head coach Mattias Johansson said. "Guys really have improved and I'm glad we could pull this win out in our last regular season match."

Johansson switched up the doubles pairings for the regular season finale, putting Nolan McCaig and Jayson Blando on court one. The duo were the first to win a doubles match on Saturday, winning 6-4. Antreas Djakouris and Bingru Chen clinched the Highlanders' second consecutive doubles point with a convincing 6-3 win on court two.

UCR fell behind 3-2 in the match during singles play, but Blando came through with gutsy 7-5, 7-6 win on four for the tie. Joshua Roth completed the comeback with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 win on five. Roth, a freshman, stormed back after dropping the second set to give UCR the momentum it needed heading into the Big West Tournament

"We have a young group of guys," Johansson said, "and I feel very good now where everyone is at and we can build on this for the conference tournament and next season "
