Box Score RIVERSIDE, Calif. – A three-set singles win by Sofia Lazzaroni following a straight-set victory by Tia Elpusan could not prevent Cal Poly from defeating UC Riverside, 4-2, Saturday at SRC Tennis Courts.
Down 0-3 after taking doubles losses by Elpusan and Hanh Pham, 3-6 to Emily Ackerman and Kim Bhunu, and Serina Saltzen and Sydney Tran, 2-6 to Mackenzie Worsnop and Dominique Stone, followed by consecutive defeats in singles play of Siplachi, 1-6 1-6 to Bhunu, and Pham, 2-6 1-6 to Delanie Dunkle, the Highlanders found themselves climbing back into contention on the No. 1 singles court.
There, Elpusan took down Stone in straight sets, 6-4 6-2. Then, over on Court 5, Lazzaroni bounced back from a 1-6 first set to blank Ackerman in the second set, 6-0, then took the third set for a 1-6 6-0 6-4 victory.
Nathalie Shamma won her first set on Court 2 against Melissa LaMette, but the junior ended up losing in three sets, 6-4 1-6 2-6. That ended play for the day with Tran's match against Grace Olyphant on Court 6 frozen at 6-7 5-6.
The Highlanders hope to benefit from being on their home court when they conclude the regular season Sunday against Hawai'i, with recognition for senior Elpusan planned before the 11 a.m. start time at SRC Tennis Courts.
