Highlanders Fall to CSUN on Senior Day

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Lauryn Garewal shined on Senior Day with a 3-for-3 day at the plate for her sixth multi-hit game of the season, but UCR wasn't able to send its seniors off with a victory in a 6-3 defeat to CSUN on Sunday afternoon at Amy S. Harrison Field.

Despite the loss, it was the Highlanders' second series win of the season, dating back to March 27-28 against Cal Poly.

"We had a tough day today," head coach Nikki Palmer said, "but learned a lot of things that we can use and practice this week to prepare for another tough opponent next weekend."

UCR struck first early, as Garewal scored on a throwing error to third after singling to shortstop and stealing second, one of her two runs on the day. She also blooped an RBI single into left field in the third inning to pull the Highlanders within a run at 3-2.

Chrys Hildebrand made her second start of the series, going 2.2 innings and facing 12 batters with five strikeouts.

UC Riverside threatened with one out and the bases loaded in the sixth inning, but left them loaded.

After Katie Barbarick relieved Hildebrand in the circle for 3.1 innings, Caitlyn Rivera entered the circle for the seventh inning for her final home appearance in a UCR uniform.

"Coming into the seventh as a senior pitcher on my senior day is something that I will always think of," Rivera said. "Being able to play with my team one last time on our home field, and pitching to a childhood friend of mine, Kennedi Sorensen, made it even better."
