RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The University of California, Riverside (UCR) baseball team began this week's now familiar four-game Big West conference set this Friday, April 9, hosting the University of Hawai'i (UH) Rainbow Warriors.
Zach Jacobs took the rubber for the Highlanders to begin the series. An RBI single from UH put the first run on the board, with the initial lead going to Hawai'i. UCR offense answered back in the bottom of the first.
Travis Bohall started things off for the Highlanders, tripling to get on base.
Cole Pofek hit a sacrifice fly to send Bohall home and tie the game at 1-1.
Bohall ignited the action again in the bottom of the third frame, getting on base with a single and stealing second to get into scoring position with one out.
Cole Pofek singled, advancing Bohall to third. Designated hitter
Jacob Shanks hit a sacrifice fly to score Bohall, lifting the Highlanders above the Rainbow Warriors, 2-1.
Highlander offense kept bringing them home, adding three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Nate Webb walked to get on base and advanced to second with a single from
Joey Nicolai.
Anthony Mata brought them both home with a two-RBI stand up double.
Ely Stuart singled through the left side, sending Mata home for the third run of the inning, putting UC Riverside up 5-1.
Jacobs put in steady work on the bump, holding Hawai'i scoreless from the second inning through the sixth. He let up just two earned runs in his 7.0 IP, with six strike outs.
In the seventh inning, the Rainbow Warriors scored two runs, cutting the deficit down 5-3.
Eric Marrujo relieved Jacobs in the eighth inning, and the Rainbow Warriors offense lit up, scoring four runs on two hits, between Marrujo and
Abbott Haffar, who closed the game for the UCR. Entering the bottom of the eighth inning the 'Bows led 7-5, which would be the final score.
Even though UC Riverside jumped out with an early lead and maintained it for most of the game, two innings of damage from Hawai'i was enough to come back and steal the series opener.
The Highlanders are ready to battle back in tomorrow's doubleheader, with the first pitch scheduled at the Riverside Sports Complex at 12:00 PM.
