UCR Looks to Salvage Sunday After Beach Locks Series

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Ely Stuart's RBI double ended 32 straight innings of scoreless pitching by Long Beach State and Nathan Webb knocked in two more to extend his team lead to 35, but the Highlanders could not prevent the Dirtbags from extending their winning streak over UCR to 13 games as they clinched the four-game series with two wins Saturday at Riverside Sports Complex.

Game one starter Tyler Frazier (2-2) struck out two of the first three 'Baggers he faced and finished with four Ks, while game two starter Tucker Juline (3-3) was chased in the third inning after fanning one Dirtbag. The Highlanders fall to 14-24 (12-19 Big West) while Long Beach improves to 17-13 (15-12 Big West).

After getting run-ruled in game one, which ended at 13-0 after seven innings, it was the bottom of the first inning of game two when Stuart doubled home Travis Bohall to tie the game at 1-1. Juline was knocked out of the game as LBSU added six runs, followed by a solo shot off new pitcher Abbot Haffar, who struck out five.

Nathan Webb (2-for-4, 2 RBI G2) knocked in the Highlanders' second run in the bottom of the fourth, with Dylan Orick (2-for-4 G2) scoring from second after his double for an 8-2 deficit. Webb's second RBI brought in Jacob Shanks, who was followed across the plate one batter later by Orick during an Anthony Mata groundball (2-for-6 both games) double play for an 8-4 ballgame. The Beach bagged two more runs in the top of the seventh off Haffar for what would be the 10-4 final score of the second game of the day.

Sunday offers the Highlanders the opportunity to salvage a win in their series with Long Beach. First pitch at The Plex is scheduled for 1 p.m.
