UCR Hits 2-0 at Home Before Splitting Saturday

RIVERSIDE, Calif – Hours after winning their second straight match at home to restart on-campus competition with a four-set win over New Orleans, UC Riverside finished its Volleyball Classic Saturday with a crosstown showdown at California Baptist, where the Highlanders fell in straight sets.

"We learned a lot about our team this weekend and the things that we need to focus on and address in order to keep improving," said head coach Michelle Patton-Coleman. "Although we are young, we have done a good job of responding throughout the pre-season and I'm looking forward to another week of growth."

The Highlanders (3-4, 0-0 Big West) kept playing inspired volleyball at home Saturday in SRC Arena, where UCR defeated the Privateers (0-5, 0-0 Southland) in the first meeting between the programs. Ayanna Kimbrough hit for .367 with 13 kills on 30 attempts with 2 errors, and Amarachi Osuji was one of three players with double-digit digs, with 19, in the win.

Against CBU (5-3, 0-0 WAC) at Van Dyne Gym in the Saturday nightcap, the Highlanders struggled on the attack, shooting .106 as a team. Mylei Vargas-Deason had 6 digs to go with 1 kill.

For the weekend, setter Zoey Seput had 91 assists and 33 digs with 1 error.

After responding well to adversity leading into their back-to-back home wins Friday and Saturday, the Highlanders can be expected to regroup after getting swept Saturday night. It begins back in the classroom, and back in practice, as UCR prepare for the Wildcat Classic Sept. 17-18 in Tucson, where UCR faces Texas Southern, Arizona and San Diego State.
