RIVERSIDE, Calif. – UC Riverside Director of Athletics Wes Mallette formally announced today, Wednesday, November 30, that long-time Highlanders Head Men's Tennis Coach, has been elevated to Director of UCR Tennis, where he will provide oversight and lead both Women's and Men's programs.Â
Johansson has led the Highlanders' Men's team since November 2015, and his appointment comes following the retirement of longtime UCR Women's Tennis Head Coach, Mark Henry.
"Coach Johansson has led our Men's Tennis program the right way and continues to build our student-athletes as leaders both on our campus and in our community," Mallette said. "Having Mattias at the helm for both Women's and Men's teams as the Director of UCR Tennis only makes sense and we are looking forward to the continued growth and progress of the program."
Johansson guided UCR to a program-record 13 wins in his first season and coached the 2019 Highlanders to a 20-16 overall record, the most wins by a Big West team that season. 2019 was also UCR's first winning record as a member of The Big West. Included in that 2019 season was a program-record 28 singles wins from All-Big West Honorable Mention student-athlete, Gilbert Chung.Â
In total, Johansson has coached five All-Big West singles selections and four All-Big West doubles teams in his time in the Inland Empire.
