MALIBU, Calif. - The University of California, Riverside (UCR) Highlanders broke their brief hiatus this month with a road game against the Pepperdine Waves on Sunday, December 11th.
The Waves established their lead quickly, jumping ahead 13-8 in the first period, forcing the Highlanders to work against a deficit early in the game.
In the second quarter, the Highlanders struggled to find a rhythm, putting up just nine points to Pepperdine's 23, cementing the Highlanders behind 36-17 as they went into the locker rooms at halftime.
The Highlanders bested the Waves in the third period, the only of the four where they outscored their opponents, 15-10.
Unfortunately, the Waves and the Highlanders tied in the final quarter, 19-19, resulting in a victory for Pepperdine, 65-51.
Mateyah Bryant led her team with a double double outscoring everyone on UCR by 11 points, earning 18 points in the game and grabbing 12 rebounds.
Esther Mattaranz followed suit, scoring 7 points and snatching 4 rebounds to take second in both categories this game after Bryant.
Women's basketball remains on the road facing Utah next on December 17 at 10 AM.
