Softball Closes Out USD Tournament

SAN DIEGO - UC Riverside closed out the USD Tournament on Sunday, dropping a 3-0 contest to South Dakota State and a 5-2 matchup to host San Diego at the USD Softball Complex.

Kat Montuya was hit by a pitch in the first inning of the front end of Sunday's final day against South Dakota State, stealing second and putting herself in scoring position.

Gigi Araki worked a nine-pitch walk to lead off the second inning, then wheeled past second on a Jantzen Owen single before being tagged out at third.

UCR put up doubles in back-to-back innings, with Haylee Kela putting herself in scoring position in the fourth inning before Moana Pisia doubled in the fifth.

Montuya made the most of her chances again in game two against the Toreros, sending a 2-2 pitch over the left field fence for an early 1-0 UCR lead.

Leah Brito reached in the fourth inning on an error that brought Max Ortega home for a 2-0 lead, but San Diego put up five runs in the fifth inning to seal the win. With a walk in the tournament's final game, Pisia has now reached base now in eight of UCR's nine games on the season.

UC Riverside is back in tournament mode next weekend, traveling to the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Cathedral City.
