UC Riverside Closes Out Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic With Pair Of Losses

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - UC Riverside closed out the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic on Sunday, falling 10-5 to Seattle and 2-0 to LMU.

Chrys Hildebrand took the circle against the Redhawks fresh off her UCR Division I-record 18 strikeouts against Southern Utah, but was quickly roughed up against the Redhawks.

After Seattle took a 5-0 lead, UCR made things interesting in the fourth inning. Kat Montuya got the Highlanders on the board in the hit category in the fourth inning, then a fielding error put runners on the corners before Haylee Kela delivered with a two-out RBI single. Gigi Araki followed up Kela's single with a two-run RBI double.

Lauryn Garewal walked in the fifth inning and stole second, and Kat Montuya's bloop single into left center field brought the junior home to bring UCR within a run before Seattle broke the game open once more.

In game two against Loyola Marymount, Megan Casper started the game in the circle and threw 4.1 innings, letting up one run in the second inning and another in the fifth before being relieved by Maddie Heinlin. Heinlin finished the game for the Highlanders striking out two and holding the Lions for the remainder of the sixth and seventh innings.

UC Riverside bats struggled to produce, with Lauryn Garewal and Marissa Burk earning the only two hits for the Highlanders.

With that, the Highlanders fall to 4-10 overall as they return to the Inland Empire to host the Amy S. Harrison Classic next Friday, March 4 through Sunday, March 6.
