SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – UC Riverside split day one of a two-day, three-game series with Cal Poly on Saturday with a 2-1 win and 8-2 setback at Bob Janssen Field.
Chrys Hildebrand was virtually unhittable in game one, carrying a no-no into the sixth inning before the Mustangs recorded their first hit with a single through the left side. Hildebrand retired her first nine batters and needed just 100 pitches in her third complete game of the season.
Both teams' first runs came in the fourth inning, with the Highlanders capitalizing on a miscue. Max Ortega singled to left to lead off the frame, then advanced to second on a bad throw to first. Gigi Araki sacrificed the Columbia transfer over to third, then Ortega came home on a passed ball.
Cal Poly tied the game a half inning later on a sacrifice fly.
Nadia Witt doubled on a 1-0 pitch to lead off the seventh, then moved up a station on Lauryn Garewal's sacrifice bunt. Witt put the Highlanders up for good on Haylee Kela's 12th RBI of the season.
Katie Barbarick took the circle in game two, but the Mustangs took a 1-0 lead on a single up the middle in the second inning that reloaded the bases. Cal Poly tacked it on in the very next at-bat with an inside-the-park grand slam.
Marissa Burk went long for the fifth time this season, tying Gigi Araki for the team lead on the season. Burk sent the first pitch of the sixth inning over the left field fence just inside the foul pole.
The rubber match is scheduled for Sunday at 1:00 p.m. on ESPN+.
