RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The University of California, Riverside (UCR) Highlanders traveled across town to the Riverside City College (RCC) Invitational for a day of local competition.
Shiloh Corrales Nelson opened the day for the Highlanders and earned the first Big West Qualifying mark of the Invite, winning the Hammer Throw with a mark of 47.62m.
The men's hammer throw followed, with
Deven Martin placing fourth for the men, with a mark of 36.82m.
Jazmyne Barron competed in the shot put and placed eighth overall with a mark of 7.52m.
Keinan Donovan led the men's effort in the shot put with a mark of 13.18m for a fifth-place finish. He was followed by
Deven Martin who placed ninth with a 12.27m mark.
Juliana Base made her debut and won the Javelin throw with a mark of 30.18, followed by teammate
Jazmyne Barron who also debuted in the event and placed fourth with a mark of 20.69m.
Corrales Nelson also competed in the Discus throw, with a third place finish and a mark of 37.92. Her teammate Base finished in seventh overall with a mark of 27.43m.
Two Highlanders placed top five in the men's Discus throw, with
Deven Martin placing third with a mark of 41.74m and Keinan Donovan coming in fifth with a mark of 41.13m.
Jessica Onwu represented the Highlanders in the women's Long Jump with a leap of 4.85m to finish in fifth place.
Kevin Orona jumped for the men, with a distance of 1.85m to also place in fifth.
Jada Reid and
Michelle Algiers made up half the field in the women's High Jump, and finished in second and third respectively. Reid came in second with a leap of 1.45m and Algiers came in right behind her at third with a mark of 1.40m.
Jessica Onwu led the Highlanders for the Triple Jump with a mark of 11.25m, placing second overall.
Anthony Reyes had one of the performances of the day for the men, earning a Big West Qualifying mark in the Triple Jump with a first place finish of 14.20m. Teammate
Calvin Black came in behind him in fourth place with a mark of 13.47m, wrapping up the field portion of the Invitational.
The women's 400 relay kicked off the track portion of the day, with McGehee, Harris, Jackson, Roy and Harris finishing in second behind the home RCC Tigers with a time of 48.19.
The men's 400 consisted of Jackson, Carr, Avalos and Day, who finished in second place with a time of 42.80.
Victoria Ervin was the first Highlander across the tape in the 1500, finishing eighth overall with a time of 4:53.83.
Sean Caster and
Joshua Mendoza finished one after the other in the men's 1500, with times of 4:02.62 and 4:03.95, for ninth and 10
th place finished respectively.
Kevin Orona was the lone Highlander to compete in the 100 m dash, coming in 16
th place with a time of 11.51.
Highlander women dominated the 800 run, with four Highlanders making up the top six finishers in a field of 17 athletes.
Carolinh Calvert crossed the finish line first overall with a time of 2:16.74. She was followed by
Dariana Miramontes who came in at 2:21.77 for the second place finish.
Samantha Velazquez finished fourth with a time of 2:25.10, followed by
Collette Lowengrub rounding out the group in sixth with a time of 2:32.27.
Aiden Davis led the men's 800, finishing in second place overall with a time of 1:57.81. He was followed by
Felix Diaz who finished sixth with a time of 2:00.69.
Quinn Williams earned a first place finish in the 400 hurdles with a time of 55.66.
Chudney McGehee finished first for Highlanders and second overall in the 200m dash, with a time of 26.46.
Kamaile Signo-Hawkins came in sixth overall with a time of 27.34. She was followed by
Michelle Algiers and
Makenna Harris, who crossed the line at eighth and ninth respectively with times of 27.79 and 27.85.
George Cervanka and
Andrew Jackson led the men's 200m dash, with Cervanka finishing fourth overall with a time of 22.26 and Jackson finishing fifth with a time of 22.43.
The women and men dominated in the 1600 relay, with Starks, Sutton, Young ,Harris and Truong finishing first overall with a time of 4:01.06, and Day, Jackson, Joseph, Carr, Avalos and Williams clocking in at 3:20.81 for a first place finish for the men as well.
Head Track and Field Coach Nathan Browne was proud of the day's performances, saying "For us, this meet is a season opener and a chance to see where we are at after our busy indoor season." He continued, "It's a bonus to get some Big West qualifying marks out of Shiloh and Anthony. We had some of our kids trying some odd events but we're still able to get several event wins and a good amount of lifetime bests to go with it. Competing in Riverside against RCC is great for the community, our student-athletes and the parents and friends that come to support."
