FULLERTON, Calif. – Five days removed from a record-breaking win over Cal Poly, UC Riverside made all kinds of history once more in a 15-5 run-rule win over Cal State Fullerton Friday night at Anderson Family Field, thanks to a six-run first inning and a UCR Division I single-game record seven doubles.
Friday marked just the second time since 2020 that UCR has scored 10 runs in back-to-back games after the Highlanders chased Fullerton's ace from the circle.
There was no fooling around on April Fool's Day for the Highlanders, as UCR jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead and batted around in the top of the first. UC Riverside loaded the bases on a leadoff single from
Lauryn Garewal, a double from
Haylee Kela and a 10-pitch walk from
Marissa Burk before
Max Ortega doubled to left center to bring all three home.
Kat Montuya walked, then
Jantzen Owen delivered her first home run of the year to chase Fullerton's ace early in the evening.
The Titans bounced back in the bottom of the first with a three-run home run to cut the Highlander lead in half, but UCR kept piling on the runs with back-to-back RBI doubles in the second.
Chrys Hildebrand went 4.0 innings with five strikeouts to become the fastest Highlander pitcher in Division I history to record 100 strikeouts, doing so in just 16 games.
Friday's win marked the first time UCR has ever scored north of 10 runs against the Titans, and Ortega's two-run home run in the fifth inning cemented the second time through seven Big West contests this year that UC Riverside has gone yard three times in a game.
UC Riverside will finish the series on Saturday with a doubleheader from Fullerton starting at 2:00 p.m. on ESPN+.
