RIVERSIDE, Calif. - UC Riverside (2-7, 0-0) finished out the CBU/UCR Tournament on Saturday with a pair of matches at the Van Dyne Gym with a five-set loss to Idaho State followed by a 3-0 loss to California Baptist in the nightcap edition of the Crosstown Showdown.
The Highlanders got out to a 9-3 lead in set one against the Bengals but dropped set one after Idaho State rallied to take the one-set advantage.
UCR put its energy on display in set two with Anya Green's seven kills leading the way. The Highlanders fought for just their third set past 25 points of the season and second of the weekend's tournament, pulling out the 31-29 win in set two. Hunter Thomas put the finishing kill on her former team to even the match.
Idaho State and UC Riverside traded the next two sets to see UCR to its second five-set affair of the season. In what was essentially a fifth normally-played set, the Highlanders put their never quit mentality on display in a tough 27-25 loss in set five.
Jessica Dean shined on defense with the Highlanders' lead in digs for the second of three matches.
UCR came out in the nightcap with urgency in the Crosstown Showdown, going on a 7-0 that forced CBU to call twice for a timeout. The Lancers though took set one by the narrowest of margins, 25-23.
California Baptist took set two by an identical score with the Highlanders on CBU's heels all night. Green and Isabella Scarlett had a match-high seven kills after two sets. The Lancers took the 25-19 win in set three for the sweep. Scarlett led UCR with 10+ kills for the fourth match this season, finishing with 10 on 18 swings.
UC Riverside will start Big West action next when the Highlanders travel to UC Davis on Tuesday, September 20 at 4:00 p.m.
