Women’s Volleyball Puts up a Fight, Falls to Long Beach State

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - UC Riverside put up another fight against one of the best teams in the Big West, but dropped a 3-1 decision to Long Beach State on Thursday night at the SRC Arena. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • UC Riverside won five of its 14 points in the first set off of Long Beach State service errors and generated seven kills on 22 swings, led by four from Sophia Ewalefo
  • The offense generated more success in set two with Beatriz Silva serving up an ace for the 14-14 tie before the Highlanders took advantage of an attacking error for the 15-14 lead. UC Riverside took a 19-15 lead in set two on an ace from Delaney Tate and evened the match with a 25-22 win. 
  • UC Riverside kept pushing onward in set three, scoring five unanswered points after calling timeout to pull to within 14-10 on a kill from Mylei Vargas-Deason.  
  • UCR went on a 5-1 run late in set four to pull within two and set their sights on a decisive fifth frame while ultimately holding the Beach to a .089 hitting percentage in the frame. The Highlanders came close, later fighting off three match points with a service error and two aces from Tate. 

HIGHLANDER HIGHLIGHTS

  • UC Riverside hit .265 in set two with three kills from Ewalefo and distanced itself from the Beach with an 11-3 run midway through that led to evening the match.
  • Nikki Hughes had a career night for the Highlanders with three kills on 11 swings and three blocks - the freshman was instrumental in helping UCR record five blocks in a match for the seventh time this season and first time at home. 
  • UCR's nine service aces on Thursday were tied for the third-most in a single match this season and most since September 23 at Cal State Fullerton. The Highlanders also reached 50 digs for the ninth time this season.
  • Ewalefo enjoyed her fourth 10-kill performance of Big West play and first at the SRC Arena, going for a team-high 13 kills while hitting .205. ⁣
