Highlanders Fight But Fall Short Against the Broncos

BOISE, Idaho - The University of California, Riverside (UCR) Highlanders traveled to the ExtraMile Arena in the Gem State to battle the Boise State Broncos. The Highlanders held the lead for most of the first three quarters thanks to an aggressive defense and relentless offense, but ultimately succumbed to the Broncos in the final quarter of the game, 63-55.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Highlanders came out aggressive, winning the tip and going on an 8-4 run in the first five minutes of play.
  • UC Riverside stifled the Broncos offense, preventing their first six attempts at the basket.
  • A three-pointer from Julia Stenberg in the final minute of the first period cemented UCR's lead over the Broncos at 15-13 by the end of the first quarter.
  • The Highlanders held on to their two-point lead for the second period, closing out the half with a 30-28 advantage.
  • UCR defense forced twelve turnovers on the Broncos in the first half of the game alone.
  • At the end of the third quarter, the Highlanders had controlled the lead much of the game with Boise State tying UCR just twice and grasping the lead for under two minutes of the first three periods.
  • The Broncos figured out how to work around Highlander defense in the fourth quarter, putting up 23 points in the final ten minutes. The Highlanders held the Broncos to 15 points or less in the first three periods.
