RIVERSIDE, Calif. - UC Riverside wrapped up an originally-scheduled three-game series with Utah Valley, dropping both games of a doubleheader, 5-0 and 6-2, on Sunday afternoon at the Riverside Sports Complex. 

UCR was caught flat-footed in game one against the Wolverines, mustering two hits in the 2023 home opener only after the eighth inning. Alfredo Capacete picked up his first hit at The Plex in his first home contest, stepping in for Alphonso Mancinas in the eighth before roping a leadoff single down the right field line.

Capacete was called out at second on a fielder's choice, but Sean McLeod reached first in the process and eventually made his way over to third before a groundout eliminated UCR's chances to erase the shutout. 

The Highlanders struck first in the back end of the doubleheader on a Jacob Badawi RBI single, his fourth of the season - all against the Wolverines. Badawi's single into center field brought home Dominic Martinez, who led off the inning with a first-pitch single into left field. 

UCR loaded the bases an inning later looking for more damage, but the offensive output was short-lived. The Highlanders ultimately pulled a run back though in the bottom of the seventh before time ran out in the shortened back end of the doubleheader. 

UC Riverside will travel to Pac-12 country to open up March, facing USC on March 1 at 6:30 p.m. from Dedeaux Field.
