RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Nikki Palmer became the all-time winningest coach in the history of UC Riverside softball on Sunday afternoon, as the Highlanders salvaged a 6-5 win over Cal Poly in the series finale.
UCR drew first blood in the first inning on Leah Brito's single to left after the Mustangs had gone ahead first in the previous two games. Brito collected two RBIs on the day, being hit in the sixth inning to cushion UCR's lead at 6-4.
All six of UC Riverside's runs came from the heart of the order with Blanco, Samiya Jones and Briza Blanco combining to go 3 for 9. Blanco belted a two-run RBI single into center as part of the Highlanders' three-run fifth inning.
Nadia Witt stretched her on-base streak to 23 with her 10th multi-hit game of the season, and Lauryn Garewal closed in on tying her longest hit streak of the season with a 2-for-4 day to make it a hit in each of her last eight games.
Maddie Heinlin picked up win number five on the season with a pair of strikeouts in 6.1 innings. Brooke Perez and Emma Falen helped out in the circle once Cal Poly countered with a three-run sixth, but Heinlin re-entered in the seventh to finish the job.
