HONOLULU - UC Riverside finished off a two-week road trip and three-game series with Hawaii on Saturday night at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium, dropping game one, 6-5 in eight innings and game two, 7-1.
UCR went down 4-0 early in game one, but Marissa Burk homered for the second straight game and third time at UH as the Highlanders felt another comeback coming on. UC Riverside got closer to the Rainbow Wahine in the top of the fourth when Leah Brito came home on a fielder's choice.Â
UC Riverside erased its second straight deficit - this one being four runs - after Jackie Alday and Nadia Witt each homered late to give UCR the 5-4 lead in the seventh, but Hawaii got a run back in the bottom of the seventh on a solo home run to center field before walking off in the eighth.Â
UCR threatened to start off game two with bases loaded, but was unable to push the first run across before Hawaii did so in the bottom half with a solo home run. The Rainbow Wahine added on with another run in the third.
Kat Montuya led off the top of the fourth inning with a double on a 2-1 pitch and Brito followed with a first-pitch single into center that brought Montuya home and cut Hawaii's lead in half.Â
Burk was at it again in the fifth inning, this time doubling down the left field line to move Lauryn Garewal from first to third even though the Highlanders could not do any damage. Hawaii, later on, tacked on back-to-back home runs to seal the series.
UCR is back at Amy S. Harrison Field next weekend, hosting CSUN for a three-game series starting on Saturday, April 22 at 1:00 p.m. on ESPN+.Â
