RIVERSIDE, Calif. - UC Riverside closed out a three-game series with Cal State Fullerton on Sunday afternoon at Amy S. Harrison Field, picking up the 3-0 win in game three.
Sunday was just the Highlanders' fifth win all-time against Fullerton in Riverside, and it came on the back of a first career complete game shutout from Maddie Heinlin. Heinlin tossed her third complete game this season and fourth of her career, and is now 2-1 in her last three appearances while averaging four strikeouts in each of those.
"I'm super proud of Maddie today," head coach Nikki Palmer said of her sophomore hurler. "She showed a strong performance in the circle today and showed that she can go the distance for us, even after having a great outing yesterday. It was nice to see our team work together offensively and Taylor in the bottom of the lineup stepping up put us over the edge for the win."
Nadia Witt kept her on-base streak alive and kicking at 26 games after being hit by a pitch in the first. Witt moved over to third before the Highlanders missed an opportunity to break the deadlock.
Witt advanced to third twice in Sunday's series finale, but UC Riverside wasn't able to capitalize on either opportunity.
Marissa Burk picked up her third RBI on the weekend as UCR got on the board first for the second time in the series. The Highlanders cushioned their lead an inning later in the fourth with Taylor Burdette's two-run RBI single to center. Burdette, who did not play in last year's series against the Titans, went 2 for 2 on Sunday with two RBIs and a run.
UC Riverside will travel north next weekend as part of a six-game road stand, facing UC Davis on April 7 and 8 in Davis.
